Start a new game

Press “Play now” on the home page to open the lobby. For your first game we suggest:

  • Opponents: “Easy” — the computer plays loosely and quickly, so you can learn the flow.
  • Length: “Quick hand” — a single hand, about five minutes.
  • Keep base points at 1 and press “Start”.

Every move is saved. Close the page and come back, and the lobby offers “Continue”.

Read the table

You sit at the bottom; the three computer players are to your right, across and left.

  • Your tiles: the bottom row, normally 13. On your turn the new tile appears on the far right.
  • Discards: the tiles each player has thrown, in front of them — your best clue for defense.
  • The center screen: tiles left in the wall and the hand number; each side shows that player’s void suit.
  • Name tags: the character on the avatar is that player’s void suit (萬, 筒 or 條), “Dealer” marks the dealer, and “Won #1” means they have already won.

Before play: dice, swap three, void suit

Each hand starts with the dice: they decide where the wall opens and who you pass tiles to. Then:

  1. Swap three: tap three tiles of one suit (tapping a different suit starts over in that suit) and press “Pass”. Not sure? Press “Suggest”.
  2. Void suit: press 萬, 筒 or 條 — the suit you will throw away this hand. Each button shows how many you hold; the smallest is usually best.

The three tiles you receive are marked so you can see what came in. Details in Swap three and the void suit.

Draw one, discard one

On your turn the draw is automatic; you just choose a discard. Tap a tile to lift it, tap again to throw it. With a keyboard, ← → choose and Enter discards.

While you still hold void-suit tiles, only those can be tapped — the rest are dimmed: you must clear the void suit first. After that, build “four sets and a pair” or “seven pairs” to win; see Winning hands.

When buttons appear

When you can act, buttons pop up above your tiles; press “Pass” (or Esc) to decline.

ButtonWhen it appears
WinSomeone’s discard completes your hand
Self-drawThe tile you drew completes your hand
PungYou hold two and someone discards the third
KongYou hold three and someone discards the fourth; or on your turn you hold four (concealed kong) or draw the fourth of a pung (added kong)

Sichuan mahjong has no chow — only pung and kong. The rules behind these moves are in Drawing, pung, kong and blood battle.

Ready hints

Once your void suit is clear, your name tag shows “Waiting on” and the tiles that win, with how many are still unseen. On your turn, lifting a tile shows “Discard to be ready”, and tiles that make you ready carry a small gold dot. You can switch these hints off in Settings.

After you win

In blood battle a win does not end the hand: the winner reveals their tiles and sits out while the others play on. After you win you just watch, and the computer speeds up. When three players have won or the wall runs out, the hand summary lists every player’s fan and every payment.
